About the Series

How did we come up with the series?

Zenzile and I attended this great event at the Brooklyn Museum a few months back, A Discussion Series: Triple Consciousness: "Mythologies of the Diva". The event was about the use of the word ‘diva’ and it’s implication for black women. It was this interactive conversation for us, by us and about us.

That night we thought up the Soul Sistah Series. We set out to create a space for women of the African Diaspora to be together and talk about our experiences in America, while taking care of ourselves, pampering ourselves, loving on ourselves.

It took us about another month before we really moved this idea forward. I, Khalilah had decided to dedicate 2015 to the divine feminine and honoring the queen of femininity the Yoruban deity Oshun. Our logo is our rendition of all of the qualities that the Goddess Oshun represents, beauty, joy, abundance, love, and a sacred sexuality that can heal the world. She is in all of us and all of us are within her.

2015 is a power year. A boss year. And we declare, a year for women of the African Diaspora to reclaim their place at the head of the table. Our Soul Sistah Series is about taking care of ourselves in every way, mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually and at the same time being our sister’s keeper. We hope that you will join us at our events this year, that sister friendships will be made, that healings will take place and joy and love will be spread.
